Informatievraag producenten (Engels) In order to gain insight in emissions of (and subsequent potential environmental risks) of substances used in wind turbines in the Netherlands we are looking for the information listed below. We are focusing on emissions during the use-phase of the turbines, so not during production, installation, etc. We are looking for information on multiple types of turbine and are interested in both onshore and offshore turbines (as complete as possible). If this is not feasible, we would like the information for the most commonly used coatings for both land and sea. Furthermore we are interested in any differences in used material, maintenance, or emissions of substances: • Between turbines on land and offshore • Between generations (old vs new turbines) • Between different sizes of turbines • Between locations (e.g., leading edge erosion near coast or more inland) We would also like to acknowledge that it might not be possible for every question to be answered in the level of detail requested, but any information that can be given will be very helpful.
Preferably we would like to receive the information in digital form (e.g., excel sheet of product composition), and in level of detail according to the following hierarchy: • Composition of used product • Presence of substances of very high concern and their concentrations • Safety data sheets • Name of product List of requested information Material composition information on coatings of wind turbine blades • • • • • •
What coatings are used? What is the layering of the coatings/in what order are the coatings applied on the blade? What is their material composition? Are any substances used that are listed on the ECHA candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) If so, in what amounts? Are PFAS/fluoropolymers used in wind turbine blades? Where and in what amounts?
Leading Edge Erosion We are interested in how much material is emitted due to leading edge erosion. So we are looking on information on the amount of weight over time, and which layers or substances erode/are emitted. Data on mass loss of wind turbine blades or data on how much new material is applied during maintenance could be of use for this. Pagina 39 van 49

How much material (weight) is lost over time? Which layers are affected? (ideally weight loss per layer/time unit) Alternatively, information of thickness and density of the layers in addition to loss of volume can give an indication of mass loss. How often is maintenance performed and are coatings reapplied? How much material is reapplied during maintenance?
Material composition coatings mast and (for offshore turbines) monopile • • • • •
What coatings are used? What is the layering of the coatings/in what order are the coatings applied? What is their material composition? Are any substances used that are listed on the ECHA candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) If so, in what amount are they in the final product?
Insight in emission rates • Are there any available leaching rates for substances of very high concern out of the outer applied coatings (especially monopile coatings which are continuously exposed to seawater)? Leaching data preferable in weight per surface area per time • Data on material loss of coatings (weight loss/m2 over time) • Frequency of maintenance of masts • How much product is reapplied during maintenance? Internals Hydraulic oil • Does leakage of hydraulic oil occur? If so, in what amounts and how quickly? • Are any substances used that are listed on the ECHA candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) • in what amounts are they in the final product? Electronic systems (e.g., transformers and distribution (sub)stations, cooling equipment) • How often are (parts of) electronic systems replaced? What SVHCs are present in those parts and in what amounts? • What kind of wear and tear are electronic systems exposed to? What are expected emissions for these parts? • What substances/formulations (mainly focused on SVHCcontaining formulations) are used in maintenance activities of electronic systems? • in what amounts are they in the final product? • For cooling systems specifically: what coolants are used and is information available on leakage over time? Do coolants contain SF6 or other F-gases? Use of galvanic anode cathodic protection for offshore
turbines • • •
Is galvanic anode cathodic protection still being used? Where? What and how much metal is used? What is the expected loss of material per year?
