EUROPEAN COMMISSION SECRETARIAT-GENERAL Directorate D - Twin Transition, Economic & Social Affairs SG.D.2 - European Green Deal

Brussels SG.D.2/MJ

Ms Anaïs Berthier ClientEarth 60 Rue du Trône (Box 11) 1050 Brussels By email ABerthier@clientearth.org

Dear Ms Berthier, On behalf of the President-elect, thank you for your engagement and for expressing your concerns in the joint open letter regarding the Draghi report on chemicals policy. Your views, as well as those of civil society, are highly valued and remain integral to shaping the European Commission's approach to policymaking. I want to assure you that the European Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to the goals set out in Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) as part of the Green Deal, especially in light of the pressing challenges highlighted in your letter. I acknowledge your concerns about the Draghi report, particularly regarding the balance between economic gains and environmental and health costs, the need for more stringent regulation of harmful substances, and the future of the circular economy. These are indeed vital issues that the Commission is carefully considering. As we move forward with the Clean Industrial Deal and the chemicals package, rest assured that your feedback will inform our ongoing discussions and future actions. We are determined to ensure that policies, including those related to the chemicals industry, prioritize both environmental protection and economic competitiveness. We also take your concerns about PFAS, hazardous substances, and the need for innovative and safer alternatives seriously.

The Commission remains committed to advancing nontoxic, circular economic models that safeguard human health and the environment. In this respect, the forthcoming revision of the REACH regulation will play a pivotal role.
