Zie de volgende pagina voor Nederlands. To the Raadscomissie: I expect that the submission of a statement in English will provoke strong objections. However, as a Jewish student at the UvA, I feel called upon to speak on my own behalf, rather than allow politicians to speak for me. Before I am dismissed as a foreigner, I wish to tell you that the names of at least eight members of my family, whom this country murdered, are etched onto the Holocaust Memorial on Weesperstraat, which police desecrated this past Tuesday with their extreme violence. I hope that is “Dutch” enough for you not to disregard this message. I have been a Master’s student at the UvA since I arrived in the Netherlands in the fall of 2021. On my first day in this country, I tore down a banner with a racist slogan that was hung over the Ring. This incident proved indicative of what would follow. I have, in fact, experienced more anti-Jewish discrimination in three years in the Netherlands than in my entire previous life in the United States. This has come from both students and professors at the UvA, from police, and others, all of whom I would characterize as generally pro-Western, pro-Zionist, and right-wing. There is certainly antisemitism at the UvA and in Dutch society, but in my experience, it does not relate to the pro-Palestinian movement.
It is surprising to me to see such enthusiasm about “fighting antisemitism” after the difficulty I encountered in eliciting any administrative resolution to my difficulties at the UvA. As a Jew, the demonstrations for Palestine do not scare me. They are welcoming spaces. I have spoken with fellow students there about my experiences with discrimination in this country. The response is invariably sympathetic, and their condemnation of antisemitism is unambiguous. I am proud to have taken part in what I can only see as a new Februaristaking. It is heartening to me to see that there remain segments of European society which will resist the encroachments of fascism and genocide. The communities that have formed around the pro-Palestinian movement are the first in which I feel more safe as a Jew in the Netherlands. As a Jew, European police brutality scares me. I do not think that a municipal or national government which deploys such heavy-handed police violence has learned anything at all from the Holocaust. I remind you of the enthusiastic role that the Dutch police played in sending Jews to their deaths. It appears to me that the accusation of “antisemitism” directed towards Muslims, Arabs, and the pro-Palestinian movement is simply a new form of scapegoating which looks very similar to the old.
The effect of this is absolution for white Europeans, denying the antisemitism which does exist in Dutch society, while repeating the same patterns which enabled the Holocaust in the first place. It is not only the genocidal violence in Palestine which I refuse “in my name,” but the extremely violent police repression which finds clear parallels in European history. I hope it is still possible for the committee to take this view under consideration. Benjamin Stewart

Benjamin Stewart
