Amsterdam City Rights Afrikanerplein 1 1091 PN, Amsterdam 26-02-2023 City Council of Amsterdam Amstel 1 1011 PN, Amsterdam Dear Members of the City Council, We are sending this leFer from Amsterdam City Rights, an alliance dedicated to advocaHng for the rights of undocumented people and refugees. I am wriHng to bring to your aFenHon a pressing issue that affects third-country naHonals who have sought refuge in the Netherlands amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While the European Union made promises of fair and just treatment for all refugees from Ukraine, regardless of race or naHonality, the reality has been far from equitable. Third-country naHonals have faced significant challenges at the European border, with a 50/50 chance of being admiFed, despite fleeing from the same conflict zone. Of parHcular concern is the recent decision by the Netherlands to disconHnue receiving thirdnaHonal Ukrainians, effecHvely shuXng the door on individuals and families who have lived in Ukraine for many years but lack Ukrainian passports. This decision not only contradicts the Netherlands' reputaHon as a champion of human rights but also undermines the fundamental principles of fairness and equality.
Moreover, the impending loss of rights, including the right to work, shelter, and residence, for thirdcountry naHonals from March 4th places vulnerable individuals and families at risk of further hardship and displacement. This includes parents with young children enrolled in Dutch schools, students in higher educaHon and professionals contribuHng to essenHal services such as Schiphol and hospitals. As third-country naHonals who have fled the war in Ukraine, we implore the municipality of Amsterdam to uphold human rights standards and treat us with the dignity and respect afforded to refugees. We request that the city council take acHon to keep shelters open and conHnue providing protecHon beyond the March 4th deadline. We ask you to ensure the safety and security of all refugees in our city. Thank you for your aFenHon to this maFer. Sincerely, Amsterdam City Rights Olamide David
