Dear Amsterdam City Council, I am writing to you regarding an experience I had in Vondelpark where I witnessed your contractors cut off the top of a tree trunk with nesting parakeets in it while pruning a tree. I understand that according to Dutch legislation it is not allowed to disturb nesting birds, and if any work is being carried out in the nesting season the tree has to be checked for nests first. Considering the size of the trees in Vondelpark and the number of leaves on their branches I wonder how realistic it is to do a thorough and effective check for nests. The part of the trunk where the birds were nesting in a hole was cut off after removing virtually all branches with leaves. If the contractors could not see the nest then I would argue it shows how ineffective these checks are. It seems to be a situation where the legislation is technically followed but the spirit of the law is not. Because of this I think you should consider changing your pruning policy so you only do this outside of the nesting season in autumn and winter. If this is not possible I think you should at least completely stop cutting off parts of tree trunks with holes in them as it is very likely birds are nesting there. Thank you for your consideration.
