Subject: A Heartfelt Plea for Club RAUM and Amsterdam's Nachtvisie Dear Council Members, We hope this letter finds you in good health. We are writing to you not simply as residents but as members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, bearing our hearts and souls in support of Club RAUM – a venue, where queerness is not merely tolerated, but celebrated. Discovering that the LGBTQIA+ community is perceived to be at “risk” in Stadsdeel Nieuw West is heartbreaking, but unsurprising. Queer people are at risk everywhere. With queerphobic and transphobic sentiments on the rise in Amsterdam, this is exactly the time to open RAUM; a space where we trust our community first and foremost to always look out for our safety. To keep RAUM closed contradicts the very essence of Amsterdam Nachtvisie and its vision to create a thriving and diverse nocturnal economy. This decision made by Stadsdeel Nieuw West is making it clear that, while queer culture can be endlessly commodified, it is not worthy of protection. This is an urgent sign that you must take action to empower and protect such independent initiatives, instead of allowing them to be shut down. Inaction sends a message that bigotry is allowed to proliferate, while queer people are pushed to the margins.

When the history of queer and club culture was on display at the Stadsarchief for the opening of the exhibition ‘Wie Danst is Vrij’ last week, Wethouder Touria Meliani embraced, celebrated and put her support on display across social media. When Mayor Halsema spoke at Erwin Olaf’s memorial she said ‘The queerness he embodied is the city she wants Amsterdam to be’. Club RAUM is the embodiment of the history, the culture and the queerness Halsema spoke about. It is not merely bricks and mortar or another nightclub, but a sanctuary where inclusion, acceptance, and self-expression flourish; a place where community is forged. It is the first club of its kind in Amsterdam: Fully queer staff, queer run, queer owned. Its importance cannot be overstated. With our whole heart, we implore you: Give Club RAUM the support and resources needed to expedite the processes and approvals necessary to open its doors to the world. In doing so, you will not only be supporting the Amsterdam Nachtvisie’s mission but also nurturing a pivotal space where acceptance shines brighter than prejudice, and where every spirit can find their place.

“Queer' not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but 'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.” – bell hooks Your decisions have the power to shape the future of Amsterdam. That takes risk and courage. As queer people; as members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community; we know about risk and courage. We ask that you make the choice that reflects the values of unity, inclusion and opportunity that you claim to represent. With unwavering hope and heartfelt gratitude, [Your Name]
